AT&T Settlement Payments On Track For December. How To Accept Yours Before It's Gone

If you filed a claim in the AT&T data breach settlement, the wait is almost over.

On October 2, a federal judge in Texas gave final approval to the $177 million settlement covering two AT&T data breaches announced in 2024. Now, after more than two years of lawsuits, millions of customers who filed claims are waiting on one thing: their payment.

Here's when it's expected, how much you could get, and what you should do right now so nothing holds it up.

The Dates That Matter

Senior U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater approved the settlement in a 73-page order. That started a 30-day window for anyone to appeal. Because the 30th day fell on a Sunday, the deadline moved to Monday, November 2.

If no appeal was filed, the settlement reaches its official "Effective Date" 10 days later, around November 12. From there, the settlement administrator has 60 days to send payments. That deadline lands around January 11, 2027.

That puts payments on track to arrive between mid-December 2026 and mid-January 2027. No exact payment date has been officially announced yet.

There is one catch. About 45 people formally objected to the settlement. If any of them filed an appeal before the deadline, everything freezes until the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rules, and that can take many months or more. A status conference in the case is also set for November 20.

How Much Will You Get?

Most claimants filed for a flat "tier" payment rather than documented losses. Settlement administrator Kroll estimates those payments at:

  • About $39 to $40 if your Social Security number was exposed in the first breach
  • About $6.50 to $8.10 for the other cash tiers

If you submitted proof of actual losses, such as fraud charges or time spent fixing identity theft, you could receive up to $5,000 for the first breach and up to $2,500 for the second. If you were affected by both, that's up to $7,500 combined.

About 4.38 million claims were filed before the deadline. Roughly 3 million have been approved, according to the New York Post.

What to Do Right Now

1. Make sure your payment method still works. If you picked PayPal or Venmo when you filed, log in and confirm the account is active and the email address on file is current. If you chose a mailed check and you've moved, update your address with Kroll through TelecomDataSettlement.com before payments start going out.

2. Check your claim status. Go to TelecomDataSettlement.com and enter your claim information. If it shows as approved, you're in the payment queue. If it shows as deficient or missing information, contact Kroll now. There may still be time to fix it before distributions begin.

If you never filed, unfortunately you're out of luck. The claim deadline was December 18, 2025, and no new claims are being accepted.

Watch Out for Scams

Big settlements attract scammers, and this one is no exception. The only official website is TelecomDataSettlement.com, run by Kroll Settlement Administration.

No legitimate party will ever ask you to pay a fee or hand over your banking information to receive your payment. If you get a call, text, or email asking for either, it's a scam. Don't click any links. Go straight to the official site instead.

How We Got Here

The settlement covers two separate incidents. In March 2024, AT&T disclosed that data on about 73 million current and former customers, some of it dating back to 2019 and including Social Security numbers, had turned up on the dark web. In July 2024, it disclosed a second breach involving call and text records taken from an outside cloud provider.

The fund is split into $149 million for the first breach and $28 million for the second. AT&T has denied responsibility for the breaches but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of a long court fight.

If November 12 passes without an appeal, the next thing you see from this settlement should be money. Check your claim and your payment method today so it doesn't get stuck.
